SITEWIDE CLEANUP: Contractor demaximus Inc. is developing a Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study (RI/FS) for the cleanup of the site. Soil, water, and toxicity data have been collected and analyzed. A draft of the Human Health Risk Assessment has been produced and reviewed by the 2229 Main Street Oversight Committee. (committee comments) Next, demaximus Inc. will develop remedial cleanup goals and options to clean up the site. Before any final decisions are made about the site wide cleanup, EPA will release the completed RI/FS for public comment and host a public meeting. |
2229 MAIN STREET OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES: Committee members meet bi-monthly with EPA to discuss technical aspects of the cleanup and develop comments. Historical information can be found in the committee’s annual reports. |
The 2229 Main Street Oversight Committee consists of seven members:
- Five members appointed by the Board of Selectmen
- One member chosen by the Board of Health
- One member chosen by the Natural Resources Committee

The 2229 Main Street Oversight Committee was formed to monitor the process leading to the cleanup at Starmet, formerly Nuclear Metals, Inc. (NMI), a former defense contractor that is now a superfund site.
