2011 Underground Conversion Project
This project includes converting the overhead electrical system to underground and installing an underground telecommunications system in the following areas: Belknap Street (from the railroad crossing to Elsinore Street), Brooks Street, Byron Street, Elsinore Street, Grant Street, Sudbury Road (from the railroad crossing to Southfield Road), and Whittemore Street. The work will be completed in three phases over the next few years.
The first phase, which is scheduled to be completed in September of this year, is to install our conduit system in the pavement and shoulder area. This will also include transformer pads and handhole locations. The second phase, which is scheduled to begin this fall, will consist of installing individual service conduit. This phase is expected to last throughout 2012 and into 2013. The third and final phase is the actual installation of underground wires and removal of the overhead system. This process is forecasted to begin in the fall of 2013 and continue into early 2014.
Phase 1 of the 2011 Underground Conversion Project is running smoothly. Once Phase 1 of the project has been completed, our staff will be installing underground conduit for house services. The Light Department will be contacting each home or business owner to gain permission to install the service conduit as we need written permission to dig on private property. We are happy to discuss proposed service locations. Any information you may be able to share with us at that time in reference to existing driveway or parking lot lighting, septic systems, dog fences, sprinkler systems, etc., is very helpful.
