Munroe Place Water Improvements
Updated 9/18/07
9/18/07 Update:

A leak was identified along an old 2-inch cast iron water main which provided service to several homes located on Munroe Place.  Due to the size and condition of the pipe, Water/Sewer Division crews initiated the replacement of approximately 230 feet of this main with new 8-inch ductile iron pipe.  A hydrant has also been installed at the end of this cul-de-sac for flushing and fire protection purposes.

Background:

The existing 2-inch cast iron main, likely installed around 1940 when the adjacent homes were built, has experienced problems in recent years.  A new 8-inch cement lined ductile iron main will be installed in its place, and water services will be replaced from the new main to the property line for each of the five homes served from this main.  A new fire hydrant will be placed at the end of the water main to allow for enhanced fire protection and system flushing.  In addition, while working in the roadway, crews will be replacing sewer services from the existing sewer main to the property lines for each of the five homes.  This work is scheduled to take place within the next month.

Installation of the water main, water and sewer services, valves, and the hydrant will involve excavation of trenches along the entire route.  Please be aware that a construction project of this type involves roadway restrictions, noise, vibrations, staging of materials, and water service interruptions.  If you have items of value that may fall or break due to vibrations, please move them to locations where they will be protected when construction is occurring nearby.  Police details or Water and Sewer Division personnel will be present to guide vehicles around the excavations where feasible.  There will be times when trenches may restrict access to some driveways; residents will be notified in advance if their driveway will be blocked on a particular day.  The road will be restored or plated each night to allow full access when work is not in progress.  No work is anticipated to be performed on weekends.  Please note that school buses and emergency vehicles will always be allowed access.

Notification of any temporary water service interruption will occur verbally or as a door hanger approximately 24 hours in advance.  Such interruption is anticipated to be brief and will take place in order to disconnect the bypass piping that is currently providing temporary water service.  Further details will be provided during the course of the project, to ensure that inconvenience is minimized.

We recognize the temporary impact this project may cause; however, the long-term benefits will be significant with respect to the reliability and quality of water service and fire protection.  If you have any questions or would like additional information, please call Elena Proakis-Ellis or Todd Manchuso at (978) 318-3250, or email eproakis@concordma.gov
