We're doing great!Concord's recycling program is very successful. Every week residents recycle over 45% of materials set at the curb, that is one of the highest curbside recycling rates in the state (and does not include yard waste recycling). While residents should be proud of Concord's high recycling rate, much more can be recycled. The State has set a goal of 70% recycling by the year 2010. To achieve this goal residents must recycle more. Are there additional materials that you can recycle?
Conduct a simple experiment
Save your waste for one week to find out how much you dispose of in an average week. On the night before your collection day, take a look at what you plan to set out. Segregate it into different categories and weigh each one. How much does each category weigh? What is the total weight of your trash and your recyclables? What percent of your waste, by weight, do you recycle? Are there items that are going into the trash that could be recycled (see 30+ more recyclable items)?
How much do each of these items weigh at your house? Newspaper & magazinesMixed paperGlass, metal, & plastic containersFood waste Non-recyclable trash (ice cream tubs, potato chip bags, broken drinking glasses, light bulbs, straws, etc.)Other

Concord Statistics From July 1999 to June 2000 Concord residents that subscribed to the municipal collection program, along with municipal buildings and schools, disposed of the following amounts of materials:
Trash - 2,254 tons - 55% of waste stream
Mixed Paper - 1,453 tons - 36% of waste stream
Commingled Containers - 356 tons - 9% of waste stream. The average household disposed of 1,300 pounds of trash and 1,250 pounds of recyclable materials last year. The average household set out 62 containers of trash. 57% of households reported that they set out one container of trash per week, 19% set out one container every other week, and 8% of the households set out one container of trash about once a month.
