Phase 1 – Effective January 23, 2007
All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable. A birth certificate and/or driver’s license will no longer suffice.
Phase 2 – Effective January 1, 2008
All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), will be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. A birth certificate and/or driver’s license will no longer suffice.
For U.S. citizens, a valid U.S. passport will meet these requirements. If you have any travel plans, you are strongly urged to obtain (or renew) a passport well in advance of your travel date. Normal processing time is six weeks, without incurring expedite fees of $60 per application. As the rush of U.S. citizens applying for a passport increases, the timeline is expected to be longer, so plan accordingly.
