West Concord Family Festival
Susan Hackett Hegarty co-chair
Mark Garvey co-chair

This year’s West Concord Family Festival was held on the weekend of September 7 and 8. The Festival went off without a hitch, thanks in great part to the efforts of the local fire and police departments, the Concord Recreation Department, a group of volunteers from the National Charity League, local high school students earning community service hours, as well as a small and diligent group of volunteers that make up the Festival Planning Committee. The intense heat of 103 degrees, certainly did impact our attendance and fund raising efforts.

On Friday night the Pasta Bash was held at the Concord Elks and catered by Vincenzo’s Ristorante. The Parade Marshal this year was Stephen Stephanopolous, the former owner of Dino’s Pizzeria. He and his family were honored to be recognized as important members of the community. The Selectmen served a delicious meal with humor and kindness.

The parade kicked off from the Elks on Saturday under the guidance of the Concord Recreation Department. The local merchants were patient and generous as the road was closed for several hours due to about 1,000 pedestrians enjoying the day’s events. There were also a craft fair and informational tables, as well as amusements and food.

This year’s scholarship recipients were Michael Webber and Franklin Adam Cannon. At the present time, the Festival Committee is still raising funds to reach the scholarship goal of $1,000 each. If you are interested in supporting this effort, please visit our web site at: www.westconcordfamilyfestival.org or call Susan Hegarty at 978-369-8660.

For the past fifteen years the Festival has been a tremendous fund raising and fun raising community event. It seems difficult to expect the same merchants and individuals to carry the responsibility of such a large event.  At this point, there is no one interested in carrying on the Festival, because of the magnitude of responsibility and cost. It has been a pleasure and an honor to chair the event for the past four years.
